Use Ultra-Pure Water for Dialysis Equipment to Improve Safety and Effectiveness of Kidney Treatment

For a long time, water purification systems for hemodialysis treatment have been considered as ancillary products to dialysis devices. However, during the dialysis treatment process, 99.3% of the dialysate is composed of water, which is used to dilute the concentrate, clean the dialyzer, and transport medications. Each patient undergoing dialysis will be exposed to 15,000 to 30,000 liters of filtered water per year. Microorganisms, chemicals, and other contaminants in the water may lead to infections, poisoning, and other serious complications in kidney disease patients undergoing dialysis treatment, causing symptoms such as hard water syndrome, dialysis fever, chloramine poisoning, and hemolysis. A study published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology showed that using ultra-pure reverse osmosis water purifier systems can significantly reduce the infection rate in HD treatment patients by more than 30%. Therefore, the purity of hemodialysis water directly affects the safety and effectiveness of kidney treatment.

To obtain high-quality dialysis water, reverse osmosis (RO) water filtration systems are widely used. Reverse osmosis is a process that separates water from a solution through a semi-permeable membrane. The work is to use high pressure to transfer water from the high-concentration side through the semi-permeable membrane to the low-concentration side, purifying the water and removing impurities. In this process, the semi-permeable membrane only allows water molecules to pass through, while preventing solutes and large particle impurities. This technology can effectively remove microorganisms, dissolved solids, and organic matter from the water.

RO water plants usually include pre-treatment, reverse osmosis membrane purification, and post-treatment. In the first step, water is filtered to remove large particle impurities, softened to remove hard substances, and disinfected to kill bacteria. Then the water enters the reverse osmosis membrane purification to be separated into pure water and concentrate, removing ions, microorganisms, heat, etc. In the final step, ultraviolet disinfection or ozone treatment is used to ensure standard-compliant dialysis water is produced.

The RO water international standards, formulated by the US. Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), are considered as the highest standards. AAMI has established strict standards for the quality of dialysis water, requiring that the total number of microorganisms in the water should be less than 100 CFU/ml, the conductivity should be less than 0.1μS/cm, the total dissolved solids should be less than 200 mg/L, and the heavy water should be less than 100 mg/L, the metal content should be less than 0.1 μg/L, and so on.

To produce stable ultra-pure RO water, which meets international certification standards, leading companies use advanced reverse osmosis membrane technology and multiple pass RO system technology to enhance the quality of hemodialysis water. RO water purification systems with automatic monitoring and alarm systems can detect water quality abnormalities promptly, ensuring the safety and constant pressure of the RO water supply.

As an RO water treatment equipment manufacturer with advanced multiple patented technologies, Wesley uses original Dow membranes, which ensure good water quality and stable water production, and employs a Triple Pass water system to purify the continuously-recycling-double-pass RO water to output ultra-pure RO water. During the ultra-pure water production, the online residual chlorine/hardness monitor and leak detector of our machine are working. These applications make the dialysis water system more reliable and efficient, even used in regions with poor water quality such as Africa, receiving high praise also. Another feature of facilities that should be mentioned is that the type of portable RO water machine is available.
